Gemelli ART is the Radiation Oncology Department, a highly specialised centre providing both in and outpatients with the best clinical and latest technological treatment options.

The main practice techniques at Gemelli ART are: Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Volumetric Arc Therapy (VMAT), Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT), Intraoperative Radiotherapy (IORT), Total Body Irradiation (TBI) and Brachytherapy.

Great importance is given to precise control of the entire delivery process, which is obtained thanks to the possibility of using an IGRT approach with state-of-the-art on-board imaging, such as EPID (electronic portal imaging devices) or cone-beam CT; a respiratory gating; a transponder-based system; an online portal dosimetry, and, in the close future, a MRI gating as well.

In addition, Gemelli ART has a Brachytherapy unit, a specific day hospital service and two dedicated wards, equipped for metabolic therapies, for palliative treatments, and for directly managing chemotherapy and supportive care.

Gemelli ART has received three Quality Assurance Certifications from the American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO) in the last decade.

At Gemelli ART, most patients are treated by using a regular multidisciplinary approach involving, on a weekly basis, dedicated meetings with surgeons, radiologists, medical oncologists and other specialised physicians, in order to provide patients with a uniquely tailored treatment strategy and to help them in making the most appropriate decision for their needs.

Weekly, multidisciplinary meetings are held for the following pathologies: head and neck, lung, breast, upper gastrointestinal, rectum, prostate, gynaecological malignancies.

The process of multidisciplinary management is best achieved by using an informatic system, based on integrated palm technology, called "Spider"; this system was specifically created to facilitate data recording, managing and sharing through an intranet connection. It is integrated with supporting decision tools.

At Gemelli ART most of the innovative technologies are available: Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT), Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), Image Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT) Sterotactic radiotherapy, Total Body Irradiation (TBI) Intraoperati Radiotherapy (IORT), Brachytherapy.

The research roadmap at Gemelli ART has three key main field of interest: clinic, data mining,
technology.

At Gemelli ART, two dedicated research laboratories have been activated, called knowledge-based oncology (KBO) Labs.

Knowledge-based oncology (KBO) is a new paradigm that aims to offer a decision model from heterogeneous data – clinical, biologic, treatment and diagnostic imaging, demographics – to predict outcome and to offer a more transparent and reproducible decision system.

Two KBO-Labs provide a valid support to the knowledge-based oncology, in order to apply the advanced medical knowledge to individual patients as a whole.

The Data mining Laboratory specialises in statistics and advanced machine learning methods that allows daily data analysis, with particular attention on privacy-preserving patients’ data. These technologies allow the creation of clinical decision supports through the continuous analysis of data collected between the various institutions, avoiding any exchange of confidential patient data, effectively preserving the privacy of patients.

The Radiomics Laboratory is devoted to the study of medical images, their representation and manipulation in an environment with an advanced informatics tecnology. Radiomics deals mainly with image reconstruction, contouring, shape and texture analysis, and extraction of new markers to be fed to the data mining pipeline for further study, such as the creation of models of clinical decision support, survival analysis, and identification of subgroups with specific clinical features.

Gemelli ART is an active node in a national and international scientific networks that foster the quality of the research, as reported by numerous publications in highly-rated journals. During the last four years we produced about 150 papers, some of them published in the most relevant high impact factor international journals.

At Gemelli ART an active program of PhD in Advanced Oncology has been activated; medical specialists and engineers are involved in it.

Gemelli ART offers several training opportunities by organising conferences and meetings on clinical and technological topics every year; the annual residential course, which has attracted scholars from all over the globe, is particularly noteworthy. In 2015, it reached its 25th edition.

In order to improve our clinical practice and keep up with rapidly changing evidence in the literature, an innovative project called ROMEO (Radiation Oncology MEta-campus Organisation) has been recently started up.

ROMEO is a platform for educational activities and a tool to facilitate web searching for medical scientific material. ROMEO is joined by university centres, research centres and hospital centres, who are willing to share skills, planning quality, and leadership.

The residents programme has 20 residents, and seven PhDs are working at Gemelli ART.

Gemelli ART hosts visitors and students from national and international centres, as well as many recipients of ESTRO travel grants.

Gemelli ART is a notch of the Italian Relief Network. It is skilled for prompt multidisciplinary
pain treatments. Its dedicated ward welcomes patient and their families in continuity with home care programs, based on short course high quality radiotherapy palliative treatments.

At Gemelli ART a monthly newspaper is published, called RT-News; it is edited by the residents of the School of Radiation Oncology and deals with educational activities, cultural initiatives and recreational proposals promoted in the Gemelli ART and open to all medical and paramedical personnel. The RT-News is sent to all previous residents of our School of Specialization (more than 150 colleagues).

At Gemelli ART, every year the so-called “Day Together” is organized. It is an event that all members of Gemelli ART enjoy and take part in. Indeed, each year excursions are organised to Italian resorts that combine natural beauty with the presence of historical, community and recreational monuments. Such experiences allow those who take part to spend a whole day in a friendly atmosphere in order to strengthen the sense of belonging to a community with shared values.

At Gemelli ART a master’s course endorsed by IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) for nurses in radiation oncology is organised every year and many courses for RTTs are provided as well.
